The sifted sand is used to cover the pattern and then the flask is filled with un-sifted sand  Sifted sand will find the nooks and crannies of the pattern better but it is not necessary to use it to fill the flask.  Sharon is "ramming" up the flask with a pneumatic rammer here.  How much is too much or too little ramming?  Years of experience will let you know.  Because of the way that the patterns on this project are affixed to the pattern board Sharon was cautious about over ramming this mold.  The results of this will be seen shortly.
