While the furnace is coming up to temperature there are things to do. Here Sharon is placing weights on top of the molds to insure that the flotation properties of the molten aluminum as it is poured into the molds and the expanding gases don't float the cope off the drag.
It is hard to visualize anything floating on molten metal but is can happen. The molds in the background have short sections of railroad track on them for weight. Amtrak runs through the Mystic/Stonington area just spitting distance from the foundry. I don't know where the track sections came from but I wonder, hmmmm.
