The cope and drag (more on this later) are installed on the pattern board and the next step is to dust the pattern with parting dust. The bag that Sharon is holding is full of the parting dust and the bag is quite porous so that the dust comes out evenly over the pattern. The purpose of the dusting is to make it easier for the rammed up sand mold to release from the pattern with minimal disturbance to the sand. Also, the parting dust is very fine and helps leave a better surface finish on the cast part.
