The pattern has been dusted with parting dust and the sprue (right) and vents (center and left) are placed by hand.  The sprue is the passage that the molten aluminum will be poured through and the vents allow air to escape out of the mold as well as providing a reservoir of metal that can help to fill the cavities as the aluminum cools and shrinks.  After the sprue and vents are held in place by the greensand collars will be placed on  the vents to make a larger reservoir.
