Even with modern pneumatic rammers there is still a place for the old time tools. This machine also has the capability to power ram. There is a plate that can be swung over the flask and the entire flask is forced up providing a powerful ramming effect.
Last summer I visited a foundry in Wisconsin and pictures of that visit can be seen at http://newenglandmodelengineeringsociety.org/Winnebago_Foundry_Page.htm At the Winnebago Foundry I did see the lift up rammer in use but they do more production type work there.
