It is indeed better to be a Chief than an Indian (or ordinary seaman at any rate). This Chief's cabin is positive luxury compared to the seaman's cabin we saw before.
Of course if the ship was torpedoed the seaman's cabin and the chief's cabin would reach the bottom at the same time.
