Museum of Steam & Technology
They sure built them pretty back in the old
days. The columns are part of the structural strength of the
building. The engines and the building are integral to each
other.
This is a view of our pump house from the "proper"
front of the building. One would have in 1859 walked up a large set of stone
stairs walked through a set up big red doors and walked in to see this image.
Everything in the pump house was made to do two things. One is was made to
pump water for the city, which saved lives by bringing clean
water to the WHOLE city but also it brought jobs. Water for
houses meant that Hamilton has the ability to now bring water to factories,
which for businessmen was important because their factories ran under steam.
So to get the business men to invest in Hamilton the city gave them tours of
the pump house. So the other reason that they built the pump house was growth
and the only way to get someone to invest in your city was to show them
something they were familiar with (this is a English type of pump house) as
well as show them something nice to look at.
