At the top of the engine is a large walking beam. The piston
rods drive the walking beam. What your looking at in this picture is the
Parallel motion linkage which was invented by James Watt which allows our
piston rods to move straight up and down but still allows our walking beam
(which if you can picture moves like a 14 ton see-saw) at angles.
