This Pratt and Whitney Gap Bed lathe is shown at the head stock. Seen very clearly is the back gear and back gear lever. The back gear allows the speed of the spindle to be reduced by dis-engaging the spindle and engaging a set of gears by means of the lever seen in the photo. I have a great love for all things Pratt and Whitney as I apprenticed there from October 1965 to October 1968. Seven thousand five hundred hours invested in learning the trade of the machinist. I consider myself very fortunate as I more or less stumbled into the trade and have enjoyed almost every day of work since then.
