United States Air Force Museum

Dayton, Ohio USA  June  2005

Tail of the B-29 known as Bock's Car.  Flown by Major Charles Sweeney it carried out the second atomic mission of WWII.   The bottom photo is a mock up of the "Fat Man" bomb which was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.   See http://www.atomicmuseum.com/tour/dd2.cfm  for a bit more information about the event.

About eight or nine years ago I had the opportunity to hear General Sweeney talk at the armory in Westerly, Rhode Island.  He was very interesting to hear.  Gave a straight forward account of both atomic missions and revealed what his thoughts were after the war was over.

As this is being written two days before the United States national holiday of the Fourth of July, commemorating our independence from Great Britain, I can't help but think of the debt of gratitude we owe to all who served in conflicts around the world to defend freedom and democracy.
