Bamboo Photos
11 June 2013
Terri Groff THESE ARE ALL MIDDLESEX COUNTY 216 photos
This site is comprised of several infestations & probably combined are an
easy one acre. No wetlands nearby however the soil is quite rich in this
area and we passed several streams in this remote, extremely rural area.
Homeowner, while pleasant to converse with, admitted to be a grower/supplier to
garden centers for several years post serious workplace injury. He planted
3 " rhizomes and now has his own forest. He uses the bamboo to make
things but did not specify product. I somehow get the impression he also grows
....... He states this species is Philadelphius crooked stick
bamboo.
Mixed
growth of trees and bamboo.
Hard
to get good photo with the wind blowing but you can see the gentle bend in this
young culm
Hope
you can determine species.
Lots
of mixed species, above third photo looks like a yellow groove on left and bisetti
on the right.
WOW
look at the zzz
Very
thick membrane.
Hope
this one helps.
Four
separate areas 200 ft x 150 ft @ 2 to 28 ft tall growing in the shade and
bright sun. I could not reach the other two areas to photo, too deep into
the woods. He assured me the other two areas were the same. 8 ft to
the road and on his property line. Gave him copy of the law. He
recognized that he would have to get busy removing bamboo. Told him he had to
burn the rhizomes.
60
ft long about 25 culms 10 ft tall of 2012 planted bisetti that is 82 ft from the
road in individual plants. THIS IS 370 MILLINGTON RD EAST HADDAM
CT MC
Note
slight green groove @ top of photo. No wetlands. But see the compost pile in
first photo.
This
is right on RT 154 & RT 82 in a little park like area. 4 contained
plantings for now, all are 7-10 ft tall.
This
one planting has 10 culms @ 7 ft tall,
Note
the barrier pot is not above ground partially covered by small gravel.
This is second pot below ground level 19 culms 8 ft tall
Do
the photos ID species?
Third pot has5 culms again not above ground.
Bisettii???
This
is almost contained. Does the pot have holes? 11 culms 10 ft
tall.
I
have lost all confidence in my ability to determine species.Bisettii?
Here
is six culm pot Very bushy. Dark red maroon branching with lime
green leaves.
LOOK @
THIS.
No
wetlands nearby but scant water under blue bridge. Persons responsible for this
park must be made aware of potential for theft of bamboo pots, and invasiveness.
This
bamboo belongs to 895 SAYBROOK RD, HADDAM CT. MC= Middlesex County.
Deserted house FOR SALE with this mess on south side of property
next to asphalt sidewalk. 195 ft long x 150 ft wide with new shoots only 3
ft away from the house. Asphalt walk leads to "Granite Lodge
Building". It appears they have been attempting to cut the errant
culms.
View
facing main busy Saybrook Rd.
Why
is Bisettii crooked?
Cut
culms dried scattered all over the for sale property.
This
lovely Kousa Dogwood will be toast soon.
Taken
from house.
What a mess. Have
zigzag but no yellow groove.
Helpful?
Unusual
to have so many internodes in such a small distance.
Has
powdery lubricant to facilitate extension of culm. And fuzzies too.
New
culm 9" tall.
Property
left of pole belongs to First Cong. Church. No wet lands noted bamboo is on a
downward slope toward road.
This
granite building is same as Haddam town hall two buildings, what an amazing
construction.
View
toward street, church's' driveway on the right of the tree.
80
ft long 22 ft wide 18 ft tall. no wetlands. Gentle curving of culm no
yellow groove found. Scattered rust colored areas noted but not from
physical damages. I measured both areas as one even with dirt driveway
dividing the groupings.
New
culms invade a garden area
Vertical
maroon brown striations on sheath. Many very skinny culms with lots of
skinny branches. See the zig zag with no yellow groove. What is up
with that?
Is
this helpful?
Few
hairs. No wetlands BUT note the slight depression in the grass between right
bamboo and road and the typical culvert short pole near the back of the
sign. What kind of an idiot puts a driveway next to a
pole? answer: same idiot who plants bamboo!
Homeowner
wanted to know if I was the bamboo police.
These
25 ft tall culms are invading the neighbors' land.12 culms apparently deserted
house with much mail in the mailbox and I added a copy of the law. This is then
10 CHRISTIAN HILL RD HADDAM CT MC
This
photo is left of driveway of a property with several species of bamboo. 20
x 35 ft x 9 ft tall lots of leaves on stalks, similar to what I found in
Montville on Crestview Drive.
This
is three species on right side driveway, note white iron pedestal in both
photos. and CLOSE proximity to house. Front species is native bamboo
(don't know name grows 2.25-2.50 ft) more than 400 plants. The lower pics
are of the middle species of bamboo and are 3-4 ft tall. some tan damaged leaves
more than 600 plants. Perhaps not Phyllostachys. bushy darker green
leaves. Culms close to the house are Phyllostachys over 100 culms see photos for
your ID of species.
Natives
Yes
they are on the steps to the door.
This
is 3-4 ft bamboo very close together like a grass but not like any nursery
decorative grass I've ever seen. No distinct culms and longer leaves than
Phyllostachys. I told her how excited I was to see so many varieties of bamboo
in an attempt to get her to talk about the species but with no success. I
assured her I was only the spotter and doing field research and not the bamboo
police. Gave her a copy of the law for her to read and related how she was
going to have to remove the invasion on neighbors' property. I don't think
that will happen in my lifetime because of her attitude.
Yellow
groove. close to the steps.
This
is 35 ft tall x 25 ft long cannot measure depth due to jungle like
conditions. stocky dark green culms no hairy thingys.
This
is more 3-4 ft tall grasses.
This
is native bamboo as per GROWING A GREENER WORLD ON CPTV as shown at the Boothbay
Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor Maine. Total property is 1.25 acres at the
most from what I could see. Unknown depth of lot.
I
believe this is Gail Reynolds property. 79 ft deep and 6 ft from her neighbors'
house. @ 154 ft long and is 120 ft to Gail's' house. Barrier is 1/2
"thick and she has obviously spent LOTS of HARD work and energy into
sinking the barrier to no success. She already has green rhizome on wrong
side of barrier. Many rhizomes (small ones )visible on her side of
barrier. No wetlands but the soil is rich and tasty to bamboo.
Looks
like two species on the left photo but I could only verify Bisettii.
Faint
line is her barrier.
39 ROOTS!
Culms
fill with rainwater and has potential for breeding mosquitoes and West Nile
Virus.
I
can see how she would get so discouraged with her property.
Rhizomes
already escaped .
Fine
hairs on rhizomes enough to start a jungle.
Orange
surveyors marking Property lines .
SOOO
Close to Neighbor. It has to be growing in their foundation. At
least in their brick chimney.
Does
this help ID?
Too
bad the CT Mountain laurel is on wrong side of barrier.
Extensive,
tall 30 + ft on south side of property that has invaded neighbors'
property, see last photos. This infestation is 100 ft x 150 ft long .
Mowed area shows many new culms that are cut leafy culms not thick ones with
sheaths.
Yellow
groove
Last
years dead culms make for great snake hiding places. I hope never to
find a sneaky snake because then I quit.
Lots
of gray @ nodes.
Is
this old cutoff yellow groove?
Gentle
curves.
culm
grew through a dried leaf.
This is escaped yellow groove onto 64 DICKINSON RD HADDAM, CT MIDDLESEX COUNTY. Across the street neighbor said # 64 is an elderly lady and will not open the door for me. This neighbor was watching me photo the bamboo and when I was finished I saw her hiding in the shadows and I waved ,grabbed the law and the photo sheets and talked with her for about 15 min. Super nice lady and she watches out for her friend. These culms are 15 ft tall and unable to determine volume of infestation. Lady said it goes over onto back neighbor on 144 CEDAR LAKE RD HADDAM but I was unable to see any on that property due to elevation even with long camera lens. No wetlands but rich soil and mixed tree growth in bamboo.
